The puddle in the bottom of the sink. The dreaded glugging noise. And then… when your water goes nowhere!
We’ve all experienced that “sinking” feeling when your sink or tub won’t drain. It’s inconvenient, and frankly… a little gross. While you may want to call a plumber immediately, there are some ways to prevent and remedy slow and clogged drains.
Why is my drain slowing down?
Common causes of slow drains include grease buildup, mineral deposits, hair, and soap scum. Over time, these things accumulate and begin to restrict water flow. If you have young children, you could have some additional causes… especially if your little one is adventurous and may have dropped items into the sink.
Can I clear it myself?
If your drain is just starting to slow down, pour a few quarts of boiling water down the drain followed by ½ cup of baking soda. After letting the baking soda sit for five minutes, pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain. This will cause a chemical reaction (remember the volcano experiment in elementary school?) and help clear minor clogs.
If the drain is completely clogged, you may want to try a plunger or a drain snake to see if you can loosen things up. Please note that none of these methods can be considered a fail-safe alternative to calling a licensed plumber.

Preventative Drain Care
Avoid slow drains by following these tips from the MRS Lacy Plumbing Team:
1. Use drain screens in the bathtub and bathroom sink and anywhere you regularly find pet hair or long hair.
2. Don’t pour bacon or beef grease down the kitchen drain. Collect it in an old tin can or use a bowl to collect it and then dump it into the trash.
3. Regularly run your garbage disposal and avoid putting large amounts of food through the disposal.
